TitleDay 2: Pumbaa Farmhouse & Cottages, Nairobi
We have a night flight to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Just after nine o'clock we arrive at Pumbaa Farmhouse + Cottages. It is a very beautiful house of the owners, surrounded by a large garden with a swimming pool and a number of lodges. The garden has been completely redesigned with local species. The peace and space are clearly appreciated by the birds and other animals. It's a fun way to get used to the environment and get to know the people. A successful place!

TitleDag 3: De Ngong Hills
The Ngong Hills are a ridge west of Nairobi. It's a long drive from our cottages, but definitely worth it. The park is very busy with Kenyans on weekends, but when we are there it is quiet. There is a walk over the ridge, where you walk over a total of seven mountain peaks. I did the first few with our driver, but if you want to continue you have to go with a “guide”. Guide here stands for a soldier who ensures safety. Today's photos were taken at the cottages and at the Ngong Hills.

TitleDay 4: Twin River Resort and Pumbaa Farmhouse & Cottages
In English times there were many tea plantations near Nairobi. The climate is pleasant;nice and warm but not hot, due to the altitude of almost 2000 meters. We visit a tea plantation that is now mainly used to entertain and feed people. The area is very beautiful: green, hilly and small-scale. Fortunately, a highway to the north had recently been built, so the ride only took half an hour instead of more than two hours.

TitleDay 5: Amboseli National Park and C102
On Wednesday morning, the BirdingBreaks guide and driver will travel to the Amboseli National Park, at the foot of Kilimanjaro. It is a long drive, but fortunately on good roads. Our glamping tent is located next to the entrance of the Kibo Safari Camp – Luxury Tented Camp in Amboseli, Kenya. After a late lunch we go into the park for the first impressions. Because we see a lot of birds, we don't get that far. That's a good sign.

TitleDay 6: Amboseli National Park, Etonet/Lenkism ward
We can explore the park all day with our driver and guide. The guide knows next to nothing about birds, but the driver is good at everything. And identifying with the books is also quite fun. I wanted to see Crowned Cranes birds, and I succeeded. They even perform courtship for us. Probably the day in the trip where we see the most different birds.

TitleDay 7: Kimana ward, Kajiado County
From the Amboseli National Park we go to the border with Tanzania, where we get another guide. On the way we visit a Masai village. Many of the Masai villages earn money from tourists by selling souvenirs and giving demonstrations. After the show we go to a small border crossing, where it is very quiet. We are picked up by a driver for the long drive from the border to Lawns Hotel Lushoto. The ride goes through beautiful landscapes, on the way to the Usambara Mountains.

TitleDag 8: Usambara Mountains
It turns out that the hotel also has its own guides, so we are not yet dependent on the late guide. But I'm making it a free morning. When the guide is there, we go to the viewpoint. We see weavers and canaries. There is probably more to see in the forest, but the walk is not easy for me.

TitleDag 9: Usambara Mountains
Now that the guide has arrived, we will drive around the area. We find the Usambara Thrush, a species that only occurs in this area. We also find a number of species that are new to me, including the beautiful silver-eared hornbills.

TitleDag 10: Naar Ndugu Lake
We go from the Usambara Mountains to Ndugu Lake via a beautiful back road. There are many water birds around the lake, including the African gaper, which is new to me: a type of stork that cannot really close its beak.

TitleDay 11: Kili Seasons Hotel and Highway B1
We have a long way to drive to Arusha National Park. We mainly go through inhabited areas, where the land belongs to the people. Fortunately, the guide makes a few stops along the way, so we still see a few new species.

TitleDag 12: Arusha National Park
Today we drive through the Arusha National Park. The park is not that big, but we see a wide variety of animals: monkeys and giraffes, water birds, small animals and warthog families.

TitleDag 13: Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park is a large area on the banks of the Tarangire River. The varied landscape provides us with many new and familiar animals. The day starts with lots of birds in what looks like a neglected vegetable garden — an unexpectedly rich corner.

TitleDay 14: Tarangire National Park and Tarangire Simba Lodge
Just like yesterday, we see a lot, also on the grounds of the lodge. While creating the website I found some birds that I didn't even remember. A lot comes along on such a journey.

TitleDag 15: Lake Manyara
We leave from the Tarangire National Park and drive along Lake Manyara to the Bougainvillea Safari Lodge, a very beautiful lodge. Along the way we see nice little birds. Most of it can be seen at the entrance to Lake Manyara National Park. The lake itself is noticeably bird-poor, very different from the coasts or rivers.

TitleDay 16: Bougainvillea Safari Lodge, Selela
Often a day with a journey on bad roads is not the place to see anything special. But today we see the most special thing of the whole trip: a secretary bird catches a rabbit, tramples it to death and calmly eats it. And all this happens in the field next to the road, which we can reach by car. In addition to the secretary bird, we see even more beautiful things: a rosy-patched bush shrike and a chestnut-banded plover.

TitleDag 17:Lake Natron
Today I have a rest day at Lake Natron. After a short walk of an hour in the morning it is already quite warm. The best spot is the central tent in the camp: shade and a breeze on the slightly higher spot. The stream next to the tent occasionally provides beautiful images. At the end of the afternoon we take a short tour in the jeep, which produces beautiful sandgrouse photos.

TitleDay 18: Serengeti National Park and Lake Natron
From Lake Natron we continue to the Serengeti National Park. We spend the night in a tent camp near the border with Kenya. The Serengeti Park is the largest in Tanzania. It is famous for the massive animal migration, which takes place in June from another part of the park. The north of the park is quite green compared to other areas we have been to. The landscape is quite flat for Tanzania, although it is certainly not flat to Dutch eyes.

TitleDag 19: Serengeti National Park
We take a tour in the park at the Kimbilia Serengeti Camp Lobo. The tour only covers a small part of the park, there is actually something to see everywhere.
Date:2025-11-19
TitleDag 20: Kimbilia Serengeti Camp Lobo
We do another tour in the park at the Kimbilia Serengeti Camp Lobo. We mainly see lions, vultures and hyenas enjoying the meat of wildebeest. It seems that the lions killed a lot with four wildebeest for one day. But there are more interested people. Perhaps the hyenas themselves also killed a wildebeest.

TitleDay 21: Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park
Today we have to drive far, and we have to be in time for a bottle of oil at the hotel at the end of the ride. Many kilometers, but along the way we keep looking at what we see. In the center of the park it is green and there is a lot to see. After that it's mainly racing on a dirt road. We are in time for the oil, and we also have time to loosen the muscles in the pool.

TitleDay 22: Ngorongoro Crater National Park, Kimba
The last national park of the trip is the Ngorongoro Crater. The crater rim is still there, and the crater floor forms a large park. There is always water and enough food for lots of game, the usual species. The most unusual sighting was a leopard, in the forest at the upper edge. That was a missing Big Five species — just like the rhino, by the way.
Date:2025-11-22
TitleDay 23: Esilalei, Arusha
After the crater we are taken to the hotel for the last night: the Kaliwa Lodge. The hotel is located in an area with plantations, but on the edge of a small valley. It is a beautiful place to relax for a while.

TitleDay 24: Kaliwa Lodge, Uduru
The last day I don't feel like going out anymore. The room has a nice terrace where monkeys pass by. And in the afternoon we see another bird of prey that we had not seen before. The return flight departs in the evening, directly to Schiphol.
